Miracle on Duncan Street

Junior de Lima (at left) recounts: There was multiplication of the pot.

I will never forget that Wednesday.  We just did not have enough meat in the pot. We know that when the stew is just about an inch from the top, it will satisfy the crowd.  But on that particular day, it was just about half.  Odette Ferreira even suggested filling it with water.  I told her I did not think that it would be a good idea.  It would be too watery, and not fair to the people.  So we went ahead cooking.  The crowd came in at 11.00 am.  We said the Rosary, sang some hymns, as we usually do, and proceeded to serve the food.  I was near the front door, and let the people in and seated them.  The first 80 or so came in and said their prayers, ate and left.  The second set came in, ate and left.  When the third set came in, I said, “My Lord, I know the pot is going to start coming to an end.”

Just then I heard Odette shout out from the back.  I hoped nothing bad was happening to her.  When I went to see what was going on Odette kept saying, “Junior, all of you, come and see this!”

When we looked in the pot there were about two inches of sauce left.  Odette scooped it up, and put it into a basin at the side, and immediately the empty pot filled.  I was really a doubting Thomas, so I said, “Let me see that again.”  And as she did it again, the same thing happened.  I said to myself, “My God, I must really praise and give you glory, for it is not anyone doing that, but you.”

On that day, we fed everyone and also gave various people boxes to take home.  When we were cleaning up and getting ready to drop Odette home, it dawned on us what had really happened that day, and how privileged we were to see the grace of God at work!
