The Great "O" Antiphons
The
"O" Antiphons are simple prayers but rich in meaning as they highlight the
spiritual ills that daily afflict God's people. Proclaimed by medieval monks, these
prayers have continued to be prayed by Christians through the centuries. They may be
prayed at any time during Advent, however, it is suggested to pray one Antiphon each day
starting on December 17th.
"O Wisdom", come! Holy Word of God you
govern all creation with your strong but tender care. Come, make us wise and show us the
way to salvation!
"O Adonai", come! Lord of Israel, you
showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush and gave him the Law on Mount Sinai. Come,
stretch out your mighty arm and set us free!
"O Root of Jesse", come! You are a sign
for all peoples; rulers stand silent in your presence, and nations bow down before you.
Come, deliver us!
"O Key of David", come! You are the
royal Power of Israel, opening the gate of heaven at your will. Come, destroy the prison
walls of death. Set your captive people free!
"O Radiant Dawn", come! Sun of Justice
shine on those who dwell in darkness. Come, Splendor of Eternal Light!
"O Keystone", come! Ruler of all
nations, you are the joy of every human heart; you unite people long apart. Come, save the
people you fashioned from dust!
"O Emmanuel", come! You are the Hope of
all nations; the Savior of all people. Come, God-with-us, come and save us!
