CARIBBEAN SCHOOL FOR CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS
Mission: "Forming Catholics to
enter into a profound
dialogue with the media culture"
The Caribbean School for Catholic Communications (CSCC) was founded in 1994 by the late Archbishop Anthony Pantin. Over the years the students, who have enrolled from many different areas in the Caribbean, have been exposed to various aspects of pastoral communications including Video, Audio, Web Design, Journalism and Media Education and this year (2009) Digital Catechetics was introduced with Sr Caroline Cerveny (USA). The aim of the School is to get Catholics en courant with techniques and production skills, as well as Catholic theory on media.
All students are exposed to 'groundings' sessions where the media-related documents of the Church (Communio Progresio, Aetatis Nove, Rapid Development, etc.) are presented with clarity using Power Point, Video clips, YouTube, Google Earth or whatever new technologies are available.
The School operates out of Emmaus Retreat Centre in Arima, Trinidad and runs for one week as a full-time residence programme. It is always scheduled for the second week in August. Students sign up for a 3-year cycle, at the end of which they receive a CSCC Diploma.
Over the years, Living Water Community has been responsible for student applications and registration, organizing of the venue, fulfilling facilitators' technical and equipment needs, sourcing guest speakers and generally handling all the administrative operations of the school.
As CSCC celebrates its 15th Anniversary this year (2009), it has launched an Associate Degree in Communications through an academic joint venture with the Catholic Institute (CREDI) of the Archdiocese of Port of Spain and the University of Dayton, Ohio (UD).
CSCC's Principal is Msgr Jason Gordon, PhD, Episcopal Vicar for Administration, Archdiocese of POS. Sr Angela Ann Zukowski (UD) has been one of CSCC's corner stones from its inception. Past UNDA International President, she is recognized with high esteem in Catholic communications circles around the world. Her experience and dedication to the school has been paramount in leading it to its present stage of maturity. Sherry Brownrigg (Omaha) has become an integral part of the Radio Workshop over the years. The School also draws on the expertise of experienced communications specialists from within the Caribbean Church. Msgr. Patrick Anthony, PhD Caribbean Literature (St Lucia) brings a wealth of knowledge to the school's faculty and runs the Journalism Workshop. Senior members of Trinity Communications Network, LWC (Trinidad), co-ordinate the Video and Audio/Radio Workshops and Raymond Syms, Catholic News/CAMSEL (Trinidad) teaches Web Design. The School also draws on CSCC graduates for additional assistance.
