PILGRIMAGE INTO THE HEART
OF THE INFANT JESUS
(by Gillian Quesnel)

On Thursday May 27th 2010, the Living Water pilgrims left Trinidad for London via Tobago on Virgin Atlantic. There were thirty of us and we were meeting the other 16 pilgrims on the other side of the Atlantic. Included in this number was our Pilgrim leader, Sandra Armstrong, our Spiritual director, Rose Jackman and our Priest for the two weeks, Fr. Arnold Francis. There was a great deal of anticipation and excitement as we looked forward to the two weeks ahead.

We arrived in London on Friday 28th May and connected on a flight to Munich that afternoon. While we were at Gatwick Airport Rose gave each one of us a meditative prayer card with a key on the back and asked that we pray each day that God would unlock our hearts and minds so that we may be free and open to experience His presence and beauty, as well as His death and resurrection as portrayed in the passion play at Oberammergau. Fr. Francis prayed Mary’s Way of the Cross with us daily and instructed us on how we too must die to ourselves so that we may rise with Jesus. We were met at the airport in Munich by our tour guide from Mancunia Travel, Pauline, and our driver, Dita. Two exceptional people who made sure that our pilgrimage went safely and on time.

GERMANY:

On Saturday morning we did a walking tour of Munich and saw some of the beautiful sites in the town’s centre. We were able to visit the church where Pope Benedict was Bishop for a number of years. In the evening we celebrated Mass at St. Paul’s Church. We started our Novena to the Infant Jesus of Prague, which would be our final stop in Europe.

Munich is a beautiful city, as is all of Germany.  Being my first time in Europe, I did feel strange to be on the other side of World War 2. My father had been an officer with the RAF and I was seeing and hearing about the destruction the allies had inflicted on the city of Munich. Any misgivings I had were quickly turned into thanksgiving for these brave men and women when we visited Dachau the following day.
